‘Iran war to cause misery beyond belief’

“I belong to that very large cohort who think it would be absolutely disastrous to attack Iran,” Ian McEwan said during The Guardian Open Weekend festival on Sunday.

The novelist repeated Iranian warnings that any attack on the country would have far-reaching consequences spreading beyond the Middle East.

“I think the mischief and misery and unintended consequences of an attack on Iran would be beyond belief,” he said.

The US, Israel and some of their allies have accused Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

The US and the EU have used this pretext to impose sanctions against Iran, while Tel Aviv has issued threats of a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities. Washington has repeatedly threatened Iran with “all options” on the table.

The Islamic Republic has strongly refuted Western allegations regarding its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The Israeli regime is widely believed to possess between 200 and 400 atomic warheads, something it has never denied under its official policy of nuclear ambiguity. Additionally, the Israelis have persistently refused to allow any international inspection of their nuclear facilities.
