Speaking at a UN General Assembly plenary meeting on the situation in Syria on Friday, Mohammad Khazaei stated that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria Kofi Annan should take major steps toward fostering interaction among the Syrian leadership and the country’s various political groups.
He also urged UN member states not to put pressure on Annan, and allow him to accomplish his mission in a neutral climate.
The senior Iranian diplomat expressed his deep regret over certain states’ attempts to bring about a regime change in Syria, encourage dissidents to take up arms against President Bashar al-Assad’s government, direct Syria toward a full-blown civil war and scupper chances of a political solution to the year-long Syrian unrest.
Khazaei highlighted that Syria is now in dire need of an end to foreign intervention as well as supply of weapons and funds to armed gangs. Rebel groups are preventing aid agencies from helping civilians in the conflict zones, he argued.
The Iranian envoy to the UN noted that the recent developments in Syria are indicative of the fact that tough sanctions against Syria and attempts to meddle in the country’s internal affairs have only complicated the Syrian socio-political crisis.
Khazaei stressed that instability in Syria will have serious repercussions in the entire Middle East, calling for a practical plan to enhance political agreement, national unity and security, civil order, and peace and stability in the Arab nation.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March last year.
While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
