Iran urges peaceful end to Africa crises

In a meeting with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Nairobi on Wednesday, Amir-Abdollahian Referred to the crisis in Somalia and the recent developments in Sudan, stressing the detrimental effects of such events on Africa’s security and stability and the progress and development of African nations.

In Mid-April, South Sudanese forces seized the oil-rich Heglig region, which is internationally regarded as a part of Sudan, resulting in days of deadly border clashes.

Sudan accuses South Sudan, which split from the North in July 2011, of supporting anti-government rebels from its conflict-hit western region of Darfur as well as those fighting in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

In Somalia, the country has been struggling with internal strife over the past five years. Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

“Iran supports measures which lead to Africa’s security and stability,” the Iranian official added.

Kenyan Premier Odinga, for his part, described relations between Iran and Kenya as strong and sincere and called for strengthening bilateral ties.
