Iran upbeat about P5+1 talks: Jalili

“Tehran is optimistic that the Baghdad talks would be a good start to promote cooperation in international, regional and nuclear issues,” Jalili said at his Tuesday meeting with Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maleki in the Iraqi capital city, Baghdad.

He also praised Iraq’s role in hosting the negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 – permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany – and described the event as the manifestation of Iraq’s international status and the enhancement of stability and security in the country.

Iran and the P5+1 are set to hold the next round of their talks over Tehran’s nuclear energy program in Baghdad on May 23.

The latest round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.

Jalili also pointed to Iraq’s rotating presidency over the Arab League and expressed optimism that Baghdad will assume a pivotal role with regard to the regional developments.

Maleki, for his part, praised Tehran-Baghdad ties as “strategic” and called for further enhancement of mutual relations.

“Iraq believes key international issues can only be settled through dialogue,” the Iraqi premier pointed out.
