Iran, Turkey discuss Syrian unrest

During a telephone conversation on Wednesday evening, the two sides exchanged views on the latest regional developments with the main focus on the Syrian urest.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with many people, including large number of security forces, killed in the turmoil.

President Bashar al-Assad has said his country is engaged in a “crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the Arab nation.

“The army is engaged in a crucial and heroic battle… on which the destiny of the nation and its people rests. The enemy is among us today, using agents to destabilize the country, the security of its citizens… and continues to exhaust our economic and scientific resources,” Assad said in a speech delivered on the 67th anniversary of the establishment of the Syrian army.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs and insurgents’ for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
