‘Iran transit route can boost trade’

Iran’s East Axis transit route is part of the historical Silk Road, the Afghan minister said, adding that Afghanistan can connect Iran to Central and South Asian countries.

The East Axis is a transit route that starts from Iran’s southern port city of Chabahar and reaches Central Asia after running through the Iranian cities of Zahedan, Birjand, Torbat Heidariyeh, and Mashhad. It is the sole transportation corridor connecting Central Asia and Afghanistan to free waters.

The Afghan official, who has taken part in the international conference dubbed “South Khorasan, Transit and Development of East Axis,” currently underway in the eastern Iranian city of Birjand, expressed hope the forum could help resolve regional problems and boost transit routes among neighboring countries, IRNA reported on Monday.

The two-day confab opened on Monday in the presence of Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Iran’s Minister of Road and Transportation Ali Nikzad and a group of state officials.

The most prominent foreign guests of the conference include transportation ministers of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Oman, India and Central Asian states.

Land transportation infrastructures, international trade corridors, special and free economic zones, and maritime and air transportation are the major topics at the event.

The Afghan minister also expressed satisfaction over the growing trade ties between Tehran and Kabul, and reaffirmed his country’s resolve to further enhance the bilateral relations in different spheres.

Iran has played an active role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

In addition to massive reconstruction contributions, the Islamic Republic has cooperated with the Afghan government in building roads and railways to expand cross-border transportation.
