‘Iran to continue supporting Syria’

In a meeting with Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham in Tehran on Wednesday, Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani said what is going on in Syria is the result of Damascus’ resistance against the Zionist regime of Israel.

“One of the problems of the world today is the double standards applied by the West to various issues, including the human and nations’ rights,” he added.

Praising the recent political reforms in Syria, the Iranian Judiciary chief noted that some of the Arab nation’s neighboring counties which have never held even a single election are now supporting the Syrian opposition.

“We are sure that the Syrian government and nation will weather the existing hardships by relying on their own abilities and with the support of the freedom-seeking nations,” Ayatollah Larijani added.

Iran’s top judicial official said one of the best reasons to reveal the colonialist nature of the Western countries is their conduct during the Libya war where they practically demolished the North African nation’s economic foundations, including its plants and infrastructures.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
