‘Iran to continue support for Syria’

“The constant interference of foreign countries and [their] clear support for violent measures of terrorist groups [in Syria] is the main obstacle in the way of political and economic development and reforms and the realization of the legitimate demands of the Syrian people,” Salehi said on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks in a meeting with Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister Omar Ibrahim Ghalawanji in Tehran.

Salehi said he is sure that the Syrian government, people and army will put the current situation behind them and Damascus’ role in the regional and international arenas will increase.

He declared Tehran’s readiness to continue support for the Syrian people, expressing hope that obstacles and problems in the way of expanding ties between Iran and Syria would be removed through bilateral cooperation and coordination.

Ghalawanji, for his part, expressed gratitude for Iran’s all-out support for the Syrian government and nation.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
