Iran to connect power grid to PG states

Mohammad Behzad, deputy Energy Minister for Electricity and Energy, said Sunday that Iran is currently negotiating power transfer to Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by constructing underwater power transmission lines in the Persian Gulf.

He added that an international consultancy company is studying design, construction, and the commissioning of an underwater electricity cable which will connect Iran to the three Persian Gulf states.

“In the event of a final agreement [between Iran and Persian Gulf states] and the construction of the underwater power line, a total of about 1,500-2,000 MW of electricity will be exchanged with these countries,” he said.

On Friday, February 24, Behzad announced that after starting power generation using natural gas from Forouz B offshore gas field, Iran will be able to sell USD 1.5-2 billion worth of electricity to Oman, Qatar, and the UAE.

The 3.8-billion-dollar gas-to-wire contract for power generation from the field’s natural gas was signed on Tuesday, February 21, between the National Iranian Offshore Oil Company (NIOOC) and MAPNA Company.

Behzad added that Iran would produce 3,000 MW of electricity per year using natural gas from the field.

Forouz B gas field is located in the Persian Gulf among three Iranian islands of Kish, Sirri and Qeshm.

Iran had a total annual electricity generation capacity of 53,000 megawatts before 2009, and plans to add 5,000 megawatts to the grid annually.

The country is currently exchanging electricity with Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, the Republic of Nakhichevan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.
