Iran summons Bahraini chargé d’affaires

On Monday, a group of people gathered outside the Iranian Embassy in the Bahraini capital and chanted slogans against Iranian officials.

Later in the day, the Iranian Foreign Ministry lodged a formal complaint with the Bahraini envoy.

The Foreign Ministry also said the gathering was unacceptable and urged Manama to make efforts to prevent a reoccurrence of such actions.

The Bahraini envoy said he would convey Tehran’s protest to the Bahraini government.

Earlier in the day, Saudi-backed Bahraini forces attacked anti-government demonstrators on the eve of the first anniversary of the popular uprising in the country.

Witnesses said that regime forces fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters in Manama as they tried to march to the site of Pearl Square, the focal point of last year’s demonstrations.

Pearl Square was razed last year as part of Manama’s crackdown on the protests. It is now called Martyr’s Square.

Bahrainis have been calling for an end to the rule of the Al Khalifa dynasty since February 2011.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others have been arrested in the Bahraini regime’s crackdown on the protesters.
