Iran stages Ionesco’s ‘The Bald Soprano’

Performed by the Leilaj Theater Group, the play is slated to be staged until June 29.

The drama was translated into Farsi by renowned Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui who staged Ionesco’s ’The Lesson’ in 2011 in Tehran.

’The Bald Soprano’ is the first play written by Ionesco. French actor Nicolas Bataille directed the premiere on May 11, 1950 at the Theatre des Noctambules in the French capital, Paris.

According to experts, with a record number of interpretations, the one-act play has become one of the most performed dramas in France.

The work is often critically said to depict absurdist ideas and motifs. Chief among them in Ionesco’s play is the concept of entropy, or the tendency of order to decay into chaos.

Born in 1909, the contemporary Franco-Romanian dramatist was one of the greatest figures of the Theater of the Absurd.

His works mostly depict the solitude and insignificance of human existence. Ionesco died at age 84 on 28 March 1994 and is buried in Paris Cimetiere du Montparnasse.
