Afghan peace negotiator, Arsala Rahmani, was killed in a drive-by shooting while on his way to work in western Kabul on Sunday morning after he left his house.
“The continuation of the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan has not only failed to establish security and calm in the country, it has led to the further escalation of insecurity,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Monday.
He expressed regret that foreign forces in Afghanistan are incapable of improving security in the country and of protecting the lives of influential figures.
The former head of the Peace Council in Afghanistan Burhanuddin Rabbani was also assassinated in September 2011.
The council had warned that no foreign power should engage with the Taliban without Afghanistan’s consent and that the office should only be used to conduct negotiations.
However, the United States has been secretly negotiating with the Taliban for more than a year.
The US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of about 130,000 US-led forces in the war-torn country.
