As Israel intensifies its military offensive against Gaza, Iran has strongly criticized the regime’s humanitarian and war crimes in the enclave’s eastern Shejaiya district, vowing to stand by the Palestinian people.
“The Iranian government and nation, as in the past, will stand by the proud Palestinian people and their brave resistance and will not be silent in the face of the brutal crimes by the Zionists,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Sunday.
She added that Muslim and freedom-seeking nations in the world would undoubtedly give an “unforgettable lesson” to the Israeli regime on Friday’s International Quds Day in support of the Palestinian resistance against the Tel Aviv regime.
Afkham once again called on international and regional bodies to fulfill their duties and put an immediate end to the Israeli regime’s inhuman crimes against the Palestinian people.
At least 60 people, including children, have been killed in heavy Israeli shelling in Gaza’s Shejaiya district since around midnight as Israeli tanks reached the edge of the neighborhood. Hundreds of people have also been wounded.
The Israeli army has reportedly prevented ambulances and emergency services from reaching the area.
The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, said its fighters exchanged fire with Israeli forces in Shejaiya and a nearby neighborhood.
At least 400 people have been killed and over 2,700 wounded by the Israeli regime in its onslaught against Gaza since July 8.
On Saturday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said children make up one third of the civilian casualties inflicted by Tel Aviv’s aggression against the Gaza Strip.
