Iran, Singapore urge expanding ties

Tony’s remarks came in a formal meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Singapore Javad Ansari while he submitted his diplomatic credentials.

The Singaporean leader described Iran’s role in Middle East developments as vital and emphasized that the Iranian nation enjoys a rich historical and cultural background.

He also expressed his optimism that both nations would witness further expansion of ties in a variety of fields.

Ansari, for his part, conveyed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s high regards to President Tony and reiterated that Iran is willing to expand cooperation with Singapore on international issues as well as economic and cultural fields.

Pointing to the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran, Ansari also extended a formal invitation to the Singaporean Prime Minister to participate in the event.

He expressed hope that Singaporean officials would partake in the NAM meeting at the highest possible level in efforts to reinforce the movement.

The 16th NAM summit will be held on August 26-31 in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Iran will receive the rotating presidency of the movement from Egypt for three years during the Tehran summit.
