‘Iran should be invited to Syria confab’

“We believe it (Iran) has to be invited. It should certainly be done,” AFP Lavrov said on Tuesday.

The Russian foreign minister said he would take part in the Syria Contact Group meeting, which is due to be held in the Swiss capital of Geneva on June 30, but indicated that the talks without Iran would be less productive.

“You have to use this chance,” Lavrov said, adding that if Iran is not invited “then all those who can really influence all the main Syrian sides will not be present.”

Russia has frequently emphasized on the importance of Iran’s presence in the meeting.

Britain, France and the United States have however expressed opposition to Iran’s involvement in the initiative on Syrian crisis.

On June 22, Joint UN and Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan said Iran should be part of the solution to the crisis in Syria.

Meanwhile, Arab League’s deputy secretary general Ahmed Bin Hilli deputy secretary general Ahmed Ben Hilli underscored the need for Iran participating in the international conference on Syria, saying, “In my view, all the players taking part in the Syrian crisis must be part of this contact group.”

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing unrest.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
