Addressing Pakistan’s National Assembly on Tuesday, he said Iran has offered USD 250 million in loan to Pakistan for the construction of the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, the Urdu-language Jang newspaper reported.
The Pakistani minister stated that Iran has also offered to undertake various stages of planning, engineering, supply of pipeline, and building compressor stations in the IP gas pipeline project.
Hussain further noted that a Pakistani delegation is scheduled to visit Iran soon to discuss the details of the offer with the Iranian side.
He added that Islamabad is currently in negotiations with many countries which may be able to help Pakistan with the construction of the pipeline.
Meanwhile, the Urdu-language Nawa-e Waqt newspaper reported that the government of Pakistan is planning to spend 40 billion rupees on developing the country’s energy infrastructures.
It added that another 35-40 billion rupees will be invested in developing Pakistan’s gas industry.
Energy-hungry Pakistan is looking to increase its fuel imports to reduce power shortage that has crippled the country’s industry, prompted riots and shaved percentage points off its GDP growth.
In addition to importing the Iranian oil, Islamabad has been in talks with Tehran over the construction of a gas pipeline which is to transfer Iran’s natural gas to Pakistan.
Despite Washington’s pressures on Islamabad to halt the project, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said on February 17 that his country’s ties with Iran would not be “undermined” by international pressure.
He added that Islamabad is determined to go ahead with joint projects with Tehran, including the IP gas pipeline.
The multi-billion-dollar gas pipeline aims to export a daily amount of 21.5 million cubic meters (or 7.8 billion cubic meters per year) of the Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.
The maximum daily gas transfer capacity of the 56-inch pipeline which runs over 900 km of Iran’s soil from Asalouyeh in Bushehr Province to the city of Iranshahr in Sistan and Baluchestan Province has been estimated to be 110 million cubic meters.
