Iran, Russia urge talks to end Syria crisis

The call for a peaceful solution to the unrest came during a Monday meeting between Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Seyyed Reza Sajjadi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister for the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov in Moscow.

Both sides expressed their opposition to any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs and maintained that such a move would only exacerbate the situation in the country.

The two officials also exchanged views on the latest developments in the Middle East and North Africa.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March, with demonstrations being held both in favor and against President Bashar al-Assad. Hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed in the unrest.

While the West and certain elements of the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that the unrest is orchestrated from overseas.
