Iran rejects Israel regime change claims

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with UN Director General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday, Silvan Shalom claimed that Iran wants to revive the Persian Empire and once again become a major superpower.

“They [Iranians] would like to change the types of regimes in the Middle East, they would like to take control of all oil fields within the Middle East, and to have a nuclear bomb,” he added.

Shalom also went on to claim that if Iranians can change regimes in the Middle East, control its oil wealth and produce a nuclear bomb, then “they believe that they will be once again a major superpower in the world.”

Reacting to Shalom’s remarks, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN Mohammad Khazaei said that Iran’s religious beliefs and constitution do not allow the country to build nuclear weapons.

“According to our religious beliefs and the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran and also the clear fatwa (Islamic religious decree) by the Leader [of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei], any use or production of nuclear weapons or any kind of mass destruction weapons are prohibited by law and by religion,” he added.

The diplomat said adherence to Islam and the Iranian constitution are two reasons why the Islamic Republic would never produce, stockpile or transfer nuclear weapons.

Alireza Miryousefi, a spokesman for Iran’s UN Mission, also dismissed Shalom’s remarks as nonsense.

“This is a nonsense statement by [the] representative of a regime that [has] killed thousands of innocents all over the world. This is a unique regime in the Middle East that has a stockpile of nuclear weapons. This regime is pursuing a policy of creating rift among Muslims in the region,” he added.

The US, Israel and their European allies accuse Iran of making efforts to build nuclear weapons under the cover of its civilian nuclear program and have used this as a pretext to get the UN Security Council impose four rounds of international sanctions against the country.

Tehran refutes such claims and says that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty it is entitled to the peaceful application of the nuclear technology.
