Iran rejects execution of sailors in KSA

“We have many prisoners in Saudi Arabia on charge of smuggling drugs. We have been informed that a few individuals will be executed in this regard,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

He said that in a telephone conversation with his Saudi counterpart, they discussed the issue and stressed the importance of exercising prudence.

“We have sent agreements on the extradition of criminals to Riyadh and called on Saudi officials to review them and express their view,” he added.

The minister thanked efforts by his Saudi counterpart and stated that the suspension of the execution order was a “good sign.”

Salehi’s remarks came after Saudi news channel Al-Tagheer claimed that officials in Saudi Arabia have reportedly executed eight Iranian sailors in Dammam without any legal proceedings.

The channel also reported that the executions were carried out on the order of the Saudi Interior Ministry.

The sailors were arrested on a fishing boat in the international waters near Saudi Arabia six years ago on charges of possessing drugs.
