In the meeting with Azeri envoy Javanshir Akhundov, Tehran strongly rejected the accusations and conveyed its strong objection to the ambassador, a Foreign Ministry statement said on Saturday.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also pointed out that Baku’s charges were against agreements between the two countries some 10 days ago on the sidelines of a meeting in Nakhichevan and were also against what Azeri defense minister said in his recent visit to Tehran.
During his visit on March 12, Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Colonel Safar Abiyev said that the country would not allow its territory to be used against its southern neighbor, Iran.
Zionist efforts to level accusations against Iran in various countries were also mentioned and the Azeri ambassador was informed of Tehran’s deep regret that Azerbaijan had become involved in such a game.
The Azerbaijani ambassador, for his part, expressed Azerbaijan’s powerful political will for developing relations with Iran and promised to convey Iran’s protest to his respective government.
On Wednesday, March 14, Azerbaijan’s security services said they have arrested 22 Azerbaijani citizens who were allegedly hired by Iran to carry out attacks against the US and Israeli embassies.
The relations between the two neighbors have been strained after Azerbaijan signed a USD 1.5 billion deal with Israel to purchase drones as well as anti-aircraft and missile systems.
