‘Iran regional clout irks French officials’

“French officials are apparently unhappy with the enthusiastic participation of our people and their 65-percent turnout in the ninth Majlis elections as well as Iran’s active and inspirational role in the region, as their reaction [to the Majlis elections] suggests”, Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters on Wednesday.

He added that Juppe’s remarks reflect his lack of familiarity with the realities of democracy, healthy competition, diversity of political groups, as well as a positive and calm election atmosphere.

Mehmanparast advised French officials to be more rational and realistic, respect the Iranian nation’s rights, and avoid interfering in other countries’ internal affairs.

“The policy of confrontation has borne no results so far and it would be more appropriate for the relevant [French] officials to focus on constructive interaction with Iran,” he said.

On Wednesday, March 7, the French Foreign Minister took part in an interview with France’s i-Télé Channel, saying he was unconvinced that Iran is really willing to bargain over its nuclear energy program.

“I am a little skeptical…. I think Iran is continuing to use double speak,” he added.

“That’s the reason why we must remain extremely firm on the sanctions we have decided upon, which are from my point of view the best way to avoid a military option, which could have immeasurable consequences,” Juppe said.

On February 15, Secretary of Iran Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili said Tehran is ready to restart negotiations over its nuclear energy program with the P5+1 comprising the US, UK, France, Russia, and China plus Germany.

He made the announcement in a letter to the European Union foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, noting that the success of negotiations is tied to the constructive approach of the P5+1 to Iran’s initiatives.

Iran and the P5+1 held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010 and in the Turkish city of Istanbul in January 2011.

While Tehran says it is ready to continue the talks based on common grounds, it has stressed that it will not give up any of its inalienable rights.
