“The wrong approach of some alien countries regarding their political and military interference in different countries has prompted serious concerns on the spread of extremism and terrorism, and the threatening of regional stability and security,” said Salehi in a meeting with Assistant Secretary of Russian Security Council Yevgeny Lukyanov in Tehran on Monday.
Iran’s top diplomat also highlighted the common positions of Tehran and Moscow on a number of sensitive issues in the region and across the globe.
“We believe a powerful Russia along with an independent Iran can assume a constructive and effective role in regional and international developments, in line with the interests of both countries,” Salehi emphasized.
He reiterated that Iran, Russia and other independent countries can play a constructive role in assisting the Syrian government and nation with overcoming the current crisis in the country and continuing the trend towards political and economic reforms.
Salehi also underlined the significance of regular consultations between Iranian and Russian officials in dealing with diverse challenges and building on opportunities to serve the interests of both countries.
Lukyanov, for his part, urged further consultations among Iranian and Russian officials on leading regional and international issues.
The Russian official criticized the “hasty and dual” attitude of Western states towards regional developments, noting that such policies have triggered an economic crisis in different countries.
