‘Iran pursues S-300 delivery legally’

Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi made the remark on Wednesday following a cabinet meeting in Tehran when asked about recent comments by an Iranian lawmaker who said despite Russia’s initial refusal to send missiles to Iran; the issue can still be followed via legal means.

On Saturday, member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Ebrahim Aqa-Mohammadi, said Moscow should fulfill its contractual obligation with Tehran by delivering the S-300 air defense system as it is not covered by the UN sanctions against Iran.

“Russia should accept that the existing sanctions against Iran have not been imposed by the United Nations, but have been imposed on Iran by the US and Europe,” he said.

“Russia should understand this reality and not refrain from delivering the S-300 missile system to Tehran,” the Iranian lawmaker added.

In an interview with RIA Novosti news agency on July 7, Igor Korotchenko, director of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade, called on Moscow to sell the S-300 defense system to Iran, arguing that the move does not run counter to any UN mandates.

Under a contract signed in 2007, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 air-defense systems.

Russia has been refusing to deliver the system to Iran under the pretext that the system is covered by the fourth round of the UN Security Council resolutions against Iran.

Meanwhile, the Iranian defense minister reiterated that there are many new defense technology inventions and development projects in progress that will be unveiled within appropriate timing.
