‘Iran-Pakistan pipeline project still on’

Despite all the odds, the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project will be implemented, Pakistani Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said at a public gathering in the Head Marla district of Lahore on Sunday.

Washington recently stepped-up its efforts to pressure Islamabad to cancel the project, even though Pakistan has been struggling to meet its energy needs, which have risen dramatically in recent years.

Last month, the International Herald Tribune reported that the United States was trying to lure Islamabad away from the gas pipeline project by offering cheaper gas to the country.

Upon completion, the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline will export 21.5 million cubic meters per day (or 8.7 billion cubic meters per year) of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.

The maximum daily gas transfer capacity of the 56-inch pipeline, which currently traverses over 900 kilometers of Iranian territory from Assalouyeh in Bushehr province to the city of Iranshahr in Sistan-Baluchestan province, is 110 million cubic meters.
