Iran only developing country to own rare blood national program

Tehran, January 10, The Iran Project – A senior official at Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization says Iran is the only developing country among the 22 countries in the world which own rare blood national program.

Speaking to a reporter on Sunday, Mostafa Moghaddam the head of Immunohematology Reference Laboratory of Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization said that possessing the storage of frozen rare blood is a criterion to define the capacity of a blood transfusion organization.

Referring to 11 January (Dey 21) as the national day of rare blood in Iran, he said that among 22 countries owning this capacity, Iran is the only developing country.

He also noted that having the national rare blood program helps the country meets the present and future needs of citizens, underlining that Iran’s Blood Transfusion Organization has so far registered the information related to one thousand Iranians with rare blood type.

“Iran began to mulling over a national rare blood program since 2009,” he stated, highlighting the prediction of the needs for people with rare blood type particularly in the case of emergency.
