The head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations has met with Iraq’s prime minister to discuss regional cooperation in assisting the Iraqi government in its fight against terror.
Kamal Kharrazi, who formerly served as Iran’s foreign minister, met with Haider al-Abadi in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Monday.
The two sides emphasized the importance of aligning regional efforts in the battle against terrorism.
Kharrazi also met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ja’afri.
Iraq has been engaged in the fight against the terrorists of the Takfiri Daesh group since the summer of 2014, when the militants took control of the major city of Mosul in the north and some other areas in Iraq.
Volunteer fighters have assisted the army of Iraq in the battle. The allied forces have managed to liberate several cities and towns form Daesh over the past months.
Iran has also been providing advisory aid to Iraq in the fight against terror.
Meeting with Syria’s Assad
On March 19, Kharrazi also met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
During the meeting, The Iranian official said Tehran would continue supporting Syria both in the fight against terrorism and the political scene.
Kharrazi also met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Damascus, where the Iranian official highlighted the importance of backing the resistance front against US and Israeli plots in the region.
According to a February report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people and displaced nearly half of Syria’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
