During a meeting in Doha on Monday, Iran’s Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi extended Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to the Qatari Emir to attend the NAM summit in Tehran.
The Iranian minister said that deep-rooted historical ties between Tehran and Doha can be an appropriate model for regional countries.
“Iran has always called for [the establishment of] tranquility, peace and security in the Persian Gulf region,” he added.
He stated that the NAM summit in Tehran would be an opportunity for countries to discuss common issues and reach agreements.
The minister expressed hope that cooperation between Iran and Qatar would play an effective role in promoting regional peace.
The Qatari Emir, for his part, highlighted the significance of bolstering amicable ties with Iran as an important country in the region.
He expressed his country’s fierce opposition to “any military intervention” and insisted that dialogue is the sole solution to any dispute between Iran and the West.
The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held in Tehran August 26-31.
Iran will receive the rotating presidency of the movement from Egypt for three years during the Tehran summit.
NAM comprises some 120 member states and 17 observer countries. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.
