In his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Mehmanparast said the latest presidential election in France indicated public dissatisfaction with outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy’s policies.

Mehmanparast said the public dissatisfaction was probably caused by France’s approach towards developments in the Middle East, the issue of Afghanistan, the Iranian nation and the wrong policies that resulted from following US policies.

The Iranian official said there were great potentials for cooperation between Iran and the European countries, expressing hope that the change in the French government would improve bilateral ties.

On Sunday, Francois Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy’s socialist rival in the French run-off presidential election, declared victory by securing around 51 percent of the votes.

The run-off was held after Hollande inconclusively won the first round on April 22 with 28.63 percent of the ballots against Sarkozy, who garnered 27.18 percent.

He is the first socialist politician to win the presidential election in 17 years.
