Iran has increased its stockpile of enriched uranium significantly, says IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday that Iran has in recent months increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium significantly. This, the agency pointed out, is a violation of its commitments under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear agreement with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and the EU.

The nuclear watchdog estimated that in early November, Tehran’s stockpile of “uranium enriched to 60 per cent levels had increased by 77 per cent to 17.7 kilograms,” reported Bloomberg. The stockpile of uranium enriched to 20 per cent levels stood at 113.4kg.

Iran’s representative office in Vienna said that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi will visit the country next week. Grossi will arrive in Tehran on Monday and hold his first meeting with Iran’s new Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on the following day.

Meanwhile, the agency has categorically rejected the possibility that its surveillance cameras were used by the perpetrators of an attack on an Iranian nuclear site in June.
