Iran hails success of Syria referendum

Amir-Abdullahian said on Tuesday that the high turnout in the referendum stems from the resolve of the Syrian government and nation to implement reforms in order to achieve national unity and integrity.

Syria’s government held a referendum on Sunday, with nearly 89.4 percent of the participants voting in favor of the new constitution.

Amir-Abdullahian added that the participation of the Syrian people despite the efforts of Syria’s enemies sent a clear message to those trying to hamper a peaceful and political solution to the Syrian crisis by sowing discord and creating insecurity.

The Iranian official reiterated Tehran’s readiness to support Syria in promoting the people’s welfare and safeguarding the country’s stability and security.

The new constitution will allow political pluralism and will also enact a presidential limit of two seven-year terms. The constitution is part of the reforms promised by President Bashar al-Assad.

Damascus has also pledged multi-party parliamentary elections within three months.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people including security forces.

Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad. The West and the Syrian opposition, however, accuse the government of killing the protesters.
