Iran, Georgia urge expansion of agricultural cooperation

Xinhua – Iran and Georgia have underlined the need to broaden ties between the two countries, particularly in the field of agriculture, semi-official Fars news agency reported on Saturday.

During the meeting between Iranian ambassador to Georgia, Javad Qavam Shahidi, and the Georgian Agriculture Minister, Levan Davitashvili, in Georgia capital Tbilisi on Friday, the two leaders explored avenues for bolstering mutual cooperation in the fields of farming and cattle-breeding.

Davitashvili pointed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed during the recent visit of Georgian Prime Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, to Iran’s capital Tehran, and said, “Iran’s support for broadening relations between the two countries is very valuable.”

He also stressed cooperation in creating modern farms, livestock control and improving the quality of agricultural products.

For his part, Shahidi called for removal of banking obstacles harming trade cooperation between Tehran and Tbilisi.

In April, Tehran and Tbilisi signed three MoUs in the areas of sport, agriculture and information technology.

The two countries’ private sectors also signed a cooperation pact to construct refinery complex and tile and ceramic manufacturing factories in Georgia.
