Iran futsal players claim WAFF title

The Iranian sportswomen, who trounced their Lebanese rivals 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out on April 10 to qualify for the final, outclassed Jordan 8-1 at the Khalifa Sports Hall on Thursday.

Iran’s Fahimeh Zarei opened the scoring only four minutes into the match. Six minutes later, Sepideh Zarrinrad seized a perfect chance to put the ball into the back of the net and double Iran’s lead.

Elnaz Armat scored the third goal for Iran in the 12th minute. A minute after, Enshirah Al Hyasat came from behind to earn Jordan’s sole goal.

Fatemeh Etedadi , Elnaz Armat, Fahimeh Zarei, Fereshteh Karimi and Naghmeh Moradi scored other Iran’s goals in the 16th, 24th, 28th, 36th and 37th minutes of the first half.

Both teams had a handful of good opportunities during the second half and injury time of the match to score goals. However, they missed their chances.

In the other match of the day, Bahrain took the third place after winning against Lebanon 8-5.

A total of seven teams from Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Qatar took part in the 2012 West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Women Futsal Championship.

Iran was in Group A along with Bahrain and Iraq; while Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Qatar formed Group B.

The 2012 West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Women Futsal Championship, which began on April 3, wrapped up on April 12.
