Iran freestyle wrestlers win Takhti Cup

Iranians clinched six gold medals and wrapped up the championship with 66 points. Russia finished in the second place with 47 points; and the Kazakh wrestling team finished third with 40 points.

Behnam Ehsanpour in the 60-kilogram class, Meysam Nasiri in the 66-kilogram, Mostafa Hosseinkhani in the 74-kilogram, Ehsan Amini in the 84-kilogram, Abbas Tahan in the 96-kilogram and Mohammad-Reza Azarshakib in the 120-kilogram were the gold winners of the Iranian outfit.

The champion team was handed USD 6,000 in cash prize, while the second and third teams received USD 4,000 and 3,000 respectively.

The 2012 Takhti Cup international wrestling tournament ran March 10 and 11 in the 12000-seater hall of Azadi Sports Complex in western Tehran.

The prestigious sports event brought together athletes from Iran, Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia.

Takhti, the most famous wrestler in the Iranian history, died on January 7, 1968. He claimed the gold medal in Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games and won two silver medals in 1952 Helsinki and 1960 Rome Olympic Games.
