Iran flourished despite sanctions: Cleric

Addressing the countries that have imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear energy program, Seddiqi said, “Iran has flourished [despite] sanctions.”

He added that the Western countries must know that their sanctions have backfired on themselves and mount more pressure on their own people than on Iranians.

Hojjatoleslam Seddiqi went on to add that the P5+1 group – Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany – were bewildered when confronted with Iran’s “wise and logical” approach in the recent negotiations between the two sides in Moscow.

The cleric noted that the Western double-standard policy of using talks along with threats and pressure means that they are not really interested in negotiations.

Iran and the P5+1 group wrapped up two days of talks in Moscow on June 19.

At the heart of the Moscow negotiations was Iran’s nuclear energy program, with Tehran standing firm on its inalienable right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.

The two sides have agreed to continue the talks through expert-level meetings in Istanbul on July 3.

The Moscow meeting came after an earlier round of two-day negotiations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in May.

Prior to that, Tehran and the P5+1 had held three rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010, and two in Istanbul in January 2011 and in April 2012.
