Iran criticizes missile shield in Turkey

“[Both sides] should avoid the measures that will damage the process of [strengthening] bilateral relations between the two countries,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Tuesday.

In a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Iran Umit Yardim, the lawmaker said it is Iran’s basic policy to expand and deepen brotherly relations with Turkey in various fields, especially with regard to parliamentary relations.

Boroujerdi, who heads Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, also stated that the establishment of peace and security in the region hinges on cooperation among regional states.

“The common interests of Iran and Turkey in the region require us to bolster and strengthen regional peace and stability through bilateral and multilateral talks and negotiations,” he added.

The Turkish ambassador, for his part, said Iran-Turkey relations are of strategic importance to the region.

He added that Turkey’s political and parliamentary officials stress the necessity of expanding cordial cooperation with Iran in all fields.

Yardim said bilateral dialogue and negotiation will strengthen the understanding between the two countries and build mutual trust.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal announced the country’s decision to host the NATO missile shield on September 2.

He claimed the missile system aims to strengthen NATO’s “defense capacity and strengthen [Turkey’s] national defense system,” and does not target any specific country.

Following Ankara’s announcement, Russia criticized the plan and slammed NATO efforts to advance eastward.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also added that Turkey’s collaboration would mark another step in the direction of the deployment “of the European segment of a global US missile defense system.”
