As a vice president of the UN conference negotiating a global arms trade treaty, Iran will seek two objectives toward regulating the production and trade of weapons, Mohammad Khazaei said in an interview with IRNA on Friday.
“The right of countries to produce weapons for security and defensive objectives must be respected and the treaty should not lead to the domination of powerful countries over developing ones with respect to the production and export of weapons,” he said.
Khazaei said Iran threw its weight behind a treaty that would regulate the production and trade of weapons globally and said, “by doing so, we can prevent major arms-producing powers from taking advantages [in this regard].”
Pointing to the existing problems regarding the issue, he said arms imports and exports need to be regulated to eliminate the possibility of smuggling arms to terrorists.
He criticized certain powers for “endangering the security of other countries by sending and exporting weapons to terrorist or opposition groups” and described funneling weaponry to terrorists as a blatant violation of human rights.
The UN conference, which runs through July 27, seeks to codify a global arms control treaty that would regulate the production as well as the import and export of conventional weapons.
