‘Iran confident in P5+1 talks outcome’

“We expect a positive result from the P5+1 group talks, which are taking place in Baghdad,” Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said at a meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart Ricardo Patino in Tehran on Wednesday.

On Wednesday and in the first session of the talks, Tehran offered a comprehensive package to the P5+1 representatives.

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili also met with the EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton, who heads the P5+1 negotiating teams in Baghdad.

The Iranian team has also been holding separate bilateral talks with the Chinese delegation, while more talks with the P5+1 group are scheduled for Thursday.

“There were positive talks held last time the group met with Iranian officials in Istanbul,” Salehi said.

The group, which is comprised of Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States as well as Germany, and Iran met in the Turkish city in mid-April and found enough common ground to continue dialogs in Baghdad.

The Iranian minister also downplayed the US persistence in pushing new rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic and lobbying its European allies to follow suit.

“Sanctions against Iran is not anything new. The US has always tried to topple us. However, this country will never surrender,” Salehi stated.

He also said what the Western countries are doing to the oil markets is hurting other countries and businesses worldwide.
