‘Iran backs plan based on Syrians rights’

Salehi made the remarks in a meeting with UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan in Tehran on Wednesday, IRNA reported.

He described the Syrian issue as a very sensitive one and reiterated that any unsystematic approach to the situation in the Arab country would entail destructive results for the region and beyond.

The top Iranian diplomat said that Syrian people are entitled to their legitimate rights, adding that the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must be given enough opportunity to implement the reforms.

Salehi warned against foreign interference in Syria and voiced Tehran’s strenuous opposition to any foreign meddling in the internal affairs of any country.

Annan, for his part, pointed to Iran’s constructive role in regional issues and said the Islamic Republic has always been part of the solution to regional issues.

The former UN secretary general highlighted consultations with Iran on Syria and said the UN-sponsored mission in Syria would work with the help and support of countries such as Iran.

He said the fate of Syria should be in the hands of Syrian people, adding that it is the duty of the international community to bring the two sides of the conflict to the negotiating table, help restore stability and peace in Syria, and find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Annan arrived in Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials about the unrest in Syria late on Tuesday night.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011.
