Iran art warmly received at Christie’s

About 43 works by contemporary Iranian artists were presented during the April edition of the 12th Christie’s auction in Dubai.

Nine top Iranian pieces were among the 40 items that sold for a total of USD 4 million on the first night.

Out of the 114 pieces sold on the second night, 33 lots belonged to Iranian artists, including the renowned sculptor and painter Parviz Tanavoli. His Poet’s Family and Wall sold for USD 62,000 and USD 37,000 respectively.

Nasrollah Afjei’s calligraphy piece Wave fetched USD 74,000.

Golden Goddess by Farhad Moshiri and Hurricane by Afshin Pirhashemi were also sold for $98,000 and $86,000 respectively.

The highest price was paid for Reza Derakhshani’s Seeded Pomegranate that fetched USD 116,000.

Christie’s Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian and Turkish Art sale, totaled USD 6.4 millions, against a pre-sale high estimate of USD 6.1m.

“Part one was 91 per cent sold, part two was 94 per cent sold,” said director of Middle East Christie’s Isabelle de La Bruyere.

The totals represented the highest percentage of works sold at auction since Christie’s opened in Dubai in 2006.

The auction offered 154 works from different countries including Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Palestine, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Sudan, Iraq and Emirates.

Ayman Baalbaki, Jewad Selim, Ahmed Alsoudani, Mohammad Ehsai, Parviz Tanavoli, Nasrollah Afjehei and Louay Kayyali are among the artists whose works went under the hammer.

This year’s art sale was held on April 17 and 18, 2012, at the Emirates Towers Hotel.
