iPhone 5 finally comes to T-Mobile

Loyal T-Mobile customers and critics of T-Mobile and it’s offerings have longed for the day when it’s network would be capable of carrying the iPhone. In fact, it is the last U.S. carrier to carry the iPhone.

Customers do not have to wait much longer. According to CNET, and T-Mobile’s official website, the iPhone 5 will be available on a no-contract basis for a $99.99 down payment and payments of $20 per month for the next 24 months will be available on April 12, 2013.

Also, according the report on CNET, “CEO John Legere emphasized that with T-Mobile’s new rate plans and the cost of the device, consumers will save more than $1,000 on the iPhone 5 compared to owning the same device over two years on AT&T’s network. T-Mobile will offer previous iPhone models on its network, such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 will also operate over T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network.”

But is this the great deal it appears to be? I had T-Mobile for almost 10 years (back when it was Voicestream) and now have AT&T with my iPhone. I’m purely interested in the numbers since getting the iPhone was the reason I went with AT&T.

In order to compare apples to apples (no pun intended), let’s assume that you will choose your phone as the 16GB version and be on an individual plan and you are starting a new line.

1. T-Mobile costs over 2 years (no-contract):

$99.99 down payment

$20/month for 24 months = $480 for two years

Individual line at $70/month for unlimited nationwide 4G (unlimited talk and text) = $1680 for two years (excluding taxes and fees)

Total costs = $2259.99

2. AT&T costs over 2 years (contract):

$199.99 for 16GB iPhone 5

Individual line with unlimited minutes at $69.99 per month, unlimited text for $20 per month, and 3 GB of data (average choice) at $30 per month = $119.99/month x 24 months = $2879.76.

Total costs = $3079.75, $819.76 more than T-Mobile

Now that was just strictly by the numbers and I know the numbers don’t tell the whole story. The numbers don’t tell about customer service, reliability of a network, speed of a network, and initial features that won’t be available (such as FaceTime over Wi-Fi). These are the variables that will ultimately decide which carrier people choose for their iPhones. And while, for some, it will come down to pure dollars out of pocket, there are other things to consider.

So, the numbers show that T-Mobile has AT&T beat on overall total cost over 2 years, but there is always more to the decision than that. Come April 12, 2013, we’ll see how the release of the iPhone on T-Mobile will really be received.
