Int’l community must assist developing countries in sustainable development:Sisi

TCP : Tools available to implement Egypt’s set strategy for sustainable development may not be up to the level of ambition, hope and challenges unfolding, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said in his speech to a sustainable development conference Friday held in advance of the United Nations General Debate.

“The difference in capacity and levels of development imposes a variation in burdens and obligations among members of the international community, which is a historical responsibility on those who have the capabilities towards those who lack them,” Sisi said.

“Further, the international community has to deal effectively with other challenges that hamper sustainable development, mostly importantly; terrorism. It has become a global phenomenon suffered not just by the Arab region, rather many countries around the world,” Sisi added.

The Egyptian president called for supporting developing countries to achieve coexistence and the right to sustainable development.

Days before heading to New York for the UNGA 70, Sisi pardoned 100 prisoners, mostly people convicted for violating the 2013 protest law and other activists. However, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a statement before world leaders take to the U.N.  stage to highlight “countries of concern,” including Sisi.

CPJ called on Sisi to address the country’s “shameful press freedom record” and release at least 10 journalists behind bars.

It also warned against “an anti-terrorism law approved by el-Sisi criminalizes basic reporting and gives a broad definition of terrorist crimes that can be used to threaten or imprison journalists.”
