Interpol rejects red warrant on Musharraf

The Interpol issued a statement, saying that the documentation that Pakistani’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had sent was insufficient as a basis for issuing a red warrant.

In response, Pakistani authorities sent another request to the Interpol with further documentation.

Prior to this, Pakistan had also sent London, where Musharraf is currently residing, an extradition request. Yet the British government rejected the request on the grounds that the two countries do not have a formal extradition treaty between them.

Musharraf is under suspicion in the Bhutto assassination case and declared an absconder by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), which ordered to freeze his assets.

Pakistan’s People Party (PPP) government has sought Musharraf’s arrest for his alleged failure in providing adequate security for Bhutto.

Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007, while leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi, the headquarters of Pakistan’s army.

Musharraf indefinitely delayed plans to return to his native country to contest elections after the government threatened to arrest him upon arrival.

Pakistani courts have issued warrants for his arrest over the 2006 death of Akbar Bugti, a Baluch rebel leader in the southwest, and the 2007 assassination of Bhutto.

Musharraf has been living in self-imposed exile in London and Dubai since August 2008.
