An international karate champion who told a 13-year-old girl he wanted to leave his wife for her and sent her nearly 5,000 texts is facing several months in jail.

Liam O’Grady, a World and European gold
medallist who has taught hundreds of children at after-school clubs,
collapsed in the dock as he was found guilty.

The court heard how the 30-year-old father-of-two bombarded her with sexual messages over an eight month period.

He told the teenager their relationship was ‘only illegal if the law knew’.

He had to be removed from court and was too distraught to return to the dock to hear the Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, remand him in custody after his conviction on Friday and he spent Christmas behind bars.

The jury heard that he sent sexual texts and pictures of himself to the girl and also sexually abused her in his house and his car.

O’Grady had denied four charges of sexual activity with a child and one of meeting a child after sexually grooming her.

He was acquitted of one of the sexual activity charges but convicted of everything else.

In total, he sent her 4,759 messages over the course of their eight-month sexual relationship.

Judge Ashurst, at York Crown Court, said: ‘The sad reality is Liam O’Grady has brought this upon himself.’

O’Grady’s wife Lisa, who gave evidence in his defence, cried in the public gallery as the verdicts were read out.

He told the court during the trial that months after meeting his wife in 2001, he began sending sexually flirtatious texts to women.

He added that he had sent sex texts to five women in the past ten years and promised them all he would leave Lisa for them.

The 13-year-old girl – the only one who was under age – was the sixth person he had flirted with by SMS.

O’Grady, who said the sex texts to the women were a ‘distraction from the realities of life’, said: ‘It’s just flirting with these ladies and making them want more than I do.

‘I told the women that I was in love with them and I would leave my wife for them.’

The court heard he told the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, that he wanted to leave his wife for her as soon as she turned 16.

Christine Egerton, prosecuting, read out texts he had sent.

One, about his plans to spend a Sunday together with the girl, included: ‘well maybe a couple of hours in bed’.

Another message, on another occasion said: ‘It’s only illegal if the law knows’ followed by ‘Or your mum’.

About his wife, he texted: ‘She is jealous of you, you’re thinner, fitter and more beautiful than her.’

Talking about O’Grady’s police interviews after his arrest, Miss Egerton said: ‘He said he intended leaving his wife when (the girl) reached 16 and they would start a proper sexual relationship then.

‘He accepted being sexually attracted, but was waiting until she was older.’

He was eventually caught after the girl’s friends alerted the authorities.

Detective Inspector Shaun Page, of York’s protecting vulnerable people unit, said: ‘I hope the verdict makes O’Grady face up to the fact that what he has done is sick and completely unacceptable.

‘He had been held in very high regard by people in York. As a karate instructor and role model, he held a position of trust which he completely abused by taking advantage of an innocent young girl.

‘O’Grady’s arrogance and repeated denials of the offences he committed meant that rather than pleading guilty when he had the chance, he has subjected his victim and her family to the further turmoil of a lengthy court process.’

A spokesman for the Karate Union of Great Britain, which suspended O’Grady after his arrest, said its disciplinary committee would consider his position after he had been sentenced next month.

His wife is as messed up as him! Why oh why would she even entertain being in
The same room as him let alone hold his hand on the way to court is staggering. Sick women. Shes nearly as bad as him. She’s virtually condoning his behaviour!

Whatever the sentence is it will not be long enough for this man. He obviously requires some very serious therapy and careful monitoring.

He’ll be for the chop then?

Why on earth did he wife speak on his behalf. 99% of other women would have run a mile from him – this lady can have no self respect for herself or her children.

What the hell is his wife doing speaking up for him. I presume he’s told her the girl forced him into the sexual relationship and nothing’s his fault.

What a vile man and his wife defended him????!! Stupid stupid woman!

I would like to know the reason his wife has stuck by him. It would be so very easy to judge her negativley, but I’m not in her shoes. I’m at a complete loss to find a viable reason myself. I feel she should not be over looked as another victim.

Most talents are a gift. Good character is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece — by thought, choice, courage, and determination.

O’Grady,Why have brought this upon yourself and family ? Hmmmmm!!!!!!

If his wife stays with him then she’s a bigger fool than he is.
