Interactive ‘Electric City’ Web Series From Tom Hanks Debuts

The first 10 episodes of Electric City, an animated web series about a post-apocalyptic world, debuted Tuesday on Yahoo. Electric City is a 20-episode science fiction series starring and created by actor Tom Hanks.

Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner for Best Actor, unveiled the scripted program at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, touting the series as an interactive adventure for viewers.

“Every now and then, storytelling and technology unite in a fun and surprising way,” Gary Goetzman of production company Playtone said in a statement. “Electric City brings viewers into a totally unique world through a truly immersive online experience whether they’re at home on their computers or mobile on their tablets and smartphones.”

On Yahoo’s home base for the web series, viewers will get to navigate a 3D map, play casual games, watch behind-the-scenes clips, discover characters’ back-stories, join discussions and post commentary on their social networks.

Episode one, “Truth or Consequences” (watch above), begins with a voice-over from Hanks:

“Paradise has many names: Eden, the Utopia, the place of security, the illusion of freedom. Humankind gets in the way of perfection; ghosts and the machinery of civilization. It’s best to ask no questions and be told no lies, here in the Electric City.”

Each episode runs 5 to 7 minutes and highlights issues such as energy consumption, freedom of information, crime and punishment. The next 10 episodes will be released Wednesday and Thursday.

Electric City is available in English, French and Spanish. Yahoo partnered with Playtone and Reliance Entertainment to produce the 90-minute series, its first push into original scripted programming.

The series includes voice-overs from Hanks, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holland Taylor, Ginnifer Goodwin, and more.

In addition to the interactive Yahoo portal, Jump Games has released an Electric City The Revolt mobile app for Android and iOS in which users can play a RPG, read digital comic books and get exclusive content.
