Inmates take over UK prison wing

Inmates have taken over a wing of a British prison and started a fire after refusing to return to their cells.

Reports say that the chaos started as the prisoners’ daily outside activities were cut short on Saturday at the HM Ranby prison in Nottinghamshire, England.

“At around 12.30pm 120 prisoners refused to return to their cells. They have taken control of a unit,” Glyn Travis, assistant secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association, said.

“We have got national resources at the prison trying to establish a surrender plan,” he said and added, “We know 60 prisoners have been actively involved.”

A report which was recently released following an 11-day inspection of the prison, showed that during the recent year two of the inmates died by their own hand and that the general condition of the prison which holds some 1,000 inmates were “dirty.”

It also showed almost half of its population said they felt unsafe having been victimized or intimidated.

A British Member of Parliament John Mann, whose constituency includes Nottinghamshire, said “It is a prison where, for quite a time, it’s been clear prisoners have been running the prison.”

‘There are not the numbers or the expertise among the staff to deal with it,” he added.

A report published on July 22, says the British government’s austerity cuts to the police force are “damaging the police service,” warning that smaller forces could face danger.

A separate report showed that the number of police officers in England and Wales had dropped to its lowest in 12 years.
