Indonesia urges energy ties with Iran

In a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Jakarta Mahmoud Farazandeh, the Indonesian minister said Tehran plays a leading role in the region.

The Iranian minister, for his part, pointed to the growing trade exchanges between the two countries during recent years as well as the great bilateral potential, calling for expansion of cooperation, particularly in the field of energy.

Farazandeh said the Islamic Republic has made considerable progress in the energy sectors and nuclear technology, expressing the country’s willingness to transfer its scientific expertise to other states.

Iran is ready to share its nuclear achievements with signatories of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) such as Indonesia on the basis of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations, he added.

The Iranian envoy also called for enhanced cooperation with Indonesia in the fields of oil, gas and Petrochemistry.

Despite anti-Iran pressures and sanctions imposed by the US and its mostly Western allies, the Islamic Republic has managed to make major achievements in peaceful nuclear energy.

Many Indonesian officials have so far renewed the country’s position that Iran’s nuclear issue must be resolved through diplomacy, negotiations and peaceful means.

In September 2011, Secretary General of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines (ICCIM) Hamid Mosaddeqi said that trade between Iran and Indonesia reached USD 1.290 billion last year which included USD 590 million of exports and USD 639 million of imports.

With the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesia is the largest economy in South East Asia.

The growth of the Indonesian economy has created growing opportunities for trade and cooperation between Iran and Indonesia.
