Indigenous leaders want booze bans removed

Queensland’s indigenous leaders will again pressure the state government to scrap alcohol restrictions in their communities.

Premier Campbell Newman announced during the Queensland election campaign that he would review the alcohol management plans, which he said were not working.

The topic will be top of the agenda at the Indigenous Leaders Forum to be held in Cairns this week.

Palm Island mayor Alf Lacey says he wants to ensure Mr Newman listens to indigenous communities when reviewing the plans.

“As democratically elected leaders of our community, we have had little say in the operation of these plans or whether we want them at all,” Mr Lacey said in a statement.

“Their operation has had negative and unintended consequences for many of our communities and we want guarantees that we will have a say on their future operation.”

Mr Newman has previously said he would not scrap the bans until new plans have been created to deal with alcohol-related problems in indigenous communities.

More than 50 mayors, councillors, chief executives and other representatives from indigenous local government areas will attend the forum.
