India’s Iron Lady released, rearrested

Dubbed the ‘Iron Lady’ of the Indian state of Manipur, Sharmila was arrested on Tuesday only a day after she was released as her one-year prison term ended on Sunday.

A local court remanded her in judicial custody for 15 days, describing her as a ‘habitual offender.’

Sharmila, who will turn 40 on Wednesday, has been on hunger strike since November 2, 2000 to demand that the Indian government repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), which she blames for violence in Manipur and other parts of India’s northeast. She has been called “the world’s longest hunger striker.”

Sharmila has been arrested, released, and rearrested over and over for not eating over the past 11 years.

She is being nasal fed forcibly at the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, which is located at Porompat in Imphal East District of the state of Manipur.

Under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, the maximum punishment for trying to commit suicide is one year. Therefore, Sharmila is released once every year, only to be rearrested for continuing the fast.
