Protesters gathered near the country’s parliament building on Monday, saying that the new rape law should be replaced with a more comprehensive measure.
The law has increased punishment for the crime to a maximum of 20 years. It also allows the death penalty for extreme cases which result in death.
The Indian cabinet passed the law on Friday some two months after the violent gang rape of a female student in the capital.
On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old medical student, identified as Jyoti Singh Pandey, was gang-raped by six men and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi.
She later died of brain damage and massive internal injuries at a hospital in Singapore on December 29, 2012.
The horrific nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have thronged the streets on an almost daily basis since the incident, demanding protection for women and capital punishment for rape.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 522 rape cases were reported in Delhi and the National Capital Region in 2011, the highest in any metro in the country, while over 650 rape cases have been reported in the capital so far this year.
People accuse officers patrolling the capital’s streets of being insensitive to sexual crimes and ignoring related complaints. They say the country’s slow judicial system makes also sure that few women dare to make a complaint, while only one third of accused rapists get punished.
