IT took emergency crews over four hours to find a wayward tourist who got lost and hit a tree in southwest Queensland.

The 26-year-old man, believed to be of Indian descent, was travelling from Melbourne to Cairns when he ended up on a dark and isolated road south of Blackall, Queensland.

He told emergency dispatchers he had hit a tree, did not know where he was and was “afraid of the animals”.

A QAS spokesman said crews received the call from the distressed man at 7.09pm Friday but he only had an old map and did not have a GPS.

Three ambulance crews from surrounding areas were dispatched immediately, eventually finding the man, who spoke only minimal English, on Langlo Road about 70km from Blackall.

“He had lacerations to his eye, ear and elbow but was conscious and out of the vehicle by the time we found him,” the spokesman said.

It is understood the man somehow left the Landsborough Highway and was found near Lumeah Station around 11.30pm.

It took another three hours to get him to Blackall Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
